Dead Sea Scrolls
March 3, 2007
Last night my amazing girlfriend and best friend took me to see the actual Dead Sea Scrolls at Union Station in K.C. First off I would just like to comment on the amazing opportunity to see what has been called one of the greatest archeological finds of this century. The scrolls began to be discovered in 1947 by a Beduin shepherd and have been studied, pieced together, and translated for the last 50 years or so. There are over 1,000 fragments of the scroll, some no bigger than a thumbnail, while some are full passages of scripture ranging from Genesis to Deuteronomy and Psalms to Isaiah and some minor prophets like Hosea and Amos. They have been dated from 200 B.C. (I’m not doing the politically correct B.C.E. deal, I’m stickin old school on this one) making them about 2200 years old. Think of that, scripture in its original Hebrew and Aramaic on lamb skin, from 2200 years ago right in front of your face. Ha, and people wonder if the Bible is accurate. It’s not only accurate in a historical sense but its also powerfully moving. Seeing Psalm 135 up close and original as it was, was very moving to me. I can’t believe I got to see the history of the Jewish people and of my own Christian tradition so tangibly and personally. As I was walking through the exhibit I felt the sense of how important writing is. If those men hadn’t written down the words of their forefathers and ancestors that came from the very mouth of God then we wouldn’t know the greatness of our God and of His history of pursuing mankind throughout each and every generation. I feel the weight of it even now as I type and it makes me wonder if anyone will ever read anything I’ve written many years from now and actually be moved closer to the Lord through it. One thing I have carried away from this whole experience is a gratefulness, not only to the writers, archeologists, scholars, and historical societies that made this exhibit possible, but to the Lord for giving us the Bible as we know it and for raising up priests and prophets and kings in every generation to make His name known among the nations. Who am I Lord, that you would give me the words of eternal life? So here I am, with a simple blog, help me to write for Your glory that someone might read the words you have given me and find out the depths of Your love. Amen.
Write for yourself and you will know yourself, write for the Lord and you will know the Lord.
